Introducing the Mystery “Bag” Challenge!

Hi Everyone!

I have been busily working away on this idea since NOVEMBER last year, and I am so happy that the time has come to share it with you all!

So who want’s to hear all about my idea?  Well to start us off I decided to call it the Mystery “Bag” Challenge for 2 reasons…

One, it’s a challenge for bag makers and bag designers, and

Two, well this one takes a bit more explaining…

Do you remember mystery bags from when you were at school?  Was it just me that had them?  Well let me tell you about these bags in case you don’t know what they are or didn’t have them…
They were usually a brown paper bag that contained a number of items that we (the students in my class) needed to use to create something new and wonderful.

So I thought, why don’t I create a bag of mystery items for bag makers and designers to use to create something special, new and wonderful?  My idea was to collect all the items and post them out to the challengers all over the world, but this was a little out of my budget…so instead I created a Mystery “Bag” Challenge List!

This Mystery “Bag” Challenge List contained 10 items that could be used in bag making, the challengers had to choose AT LEAST 3 of the items to use in their creation…want to know what was on the list? Have a look below my friends…

Of course there were a few rules that had to be followed, the bag makers and designers involved had to chose to create within one of the following 3 categories:

  1. Design a beautiful and original bag that incorporates the mystery items – no pattern required to be made, this category is just to show off your bag making skillz 😉
  2. Design a free/paid pattern that incorporates the mystery items
  3. Create a free tutorial (or hack an already published pattern) that incorporates the mystery items

The bag makers and designers involved in the challenge had from January 1st 2017 until March 30th 2017 to make their creations for the challenge – and boy have they done an AMAZING job!  I can’t wait to show you all their amazing creations in the coming weeks 🙂

But who are the amazing 11 bag makers and designers involved in the challenge?  Let me show you who they are below, we will be finding out more about these amazing women in the coming weeks too!

Starting next Tuesday here on the blog I’ll be sharing the wonderful creations made during the challenge…so see you all back here next week 😉

Until then, happy sewing!
Emma xx

Good Morning……I am Camille Davies and went to your website via Lorelei Jayne’s website. I was reading what was written under your photo and clicked on “Read More” and the following came up:

Mystery "Bag" Challenge: Charlotte from Les Envies De Charlotte - Emkie Designs
    May 5, 2017 at 3:57 am

[…] Hi my name is Charlotte, I’m French, and live in the Parisian suburbs. I’m 37, have 2 boys (3 and 9), work full time in an American investment bank in Paris (but not for long though…) and started sewing when I was pregnant with my youngest. Been making bags for the past 2.5 years now and sooo longing for extra free time to make so much more… FB: http://www.facebook.com/LesEnviesDeCharlotte/ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/lesenviesdecharlotte/ Let’s get to know Charlotte a little bit more before we have a look at her wonderful creation 😉 1. Describe yourself in 5 words… French, Creative, Ambitious (oops), Blingaholic, Pinkaholic 2. Tell us something not many people would know about you… My sudden urge to learn to sew came when I was pregnant with my youngest (no, I didn’t crave strawberries, but I craved for a sewing machine !! (and my first machine was an Ikea one…) 3. How long have you been sewing? Exactly four years now. I work full time, so sewing only happens during my spare time (which I have so little of, as my two kids are still young) 4. Is sewing the only craft you spend time enjoying? If not, what other crafts help you pass the time? At present, yes !! but when I was younger (ages ago…), I loved making jewellery  5. Do you only make bags? If not, what else do you enjoy making? I started off with pencil cases, small pouches, accessories for babies (bibs etc), but now, I mainly do bags) 6. What made you fall in love with making bags? All the beautiful patterns out there!! I’m amazed at all the talented bag pattern designers who come up with new designs every other day. So many patterns, so little time. 7. What was your favourite item in the mystery bag challenge list? Did you use it in your entry? If not, why? I loooooove grommets. They add just the touch of bling you need and you can use them for so many reasons… and yes, of course I use some!! 8. Have you got any exciting things coming up that you think would interest us? We would love to support you if you do! I’m finally taking the plunge and quitting my day job to focus only on my sewing. My little online store is four years old now and I’m so glad I’ll be able to stock it up with all the things I love, and not just focus on custom orders. I’m also thinking about giving classes to beginner sewists. My family and I are moving this summer and my sewing area will be five times as big as what I currently have, and will be able to accommodate a working area for classes. 9.Which category did you decide to enter the Mystery “Bag” Challenge in? Why did you chose this category? Category 1: design a bag I chose the category for the challenge to actually come up with a design of my own. After searching quite a while for said design (and after 2 fails…), decided to ‘upscale’ the very first bag I made when I launched my online store, and after learning so many things along the way thanks to all the amazing patterns out there. 10. What is your favourite thing about your entry into the challenge? To be able to do a before/after of my very first design 🙂 11. What did you enjoy most about the challenge? The personal kick in the *** I gave myself to actually come up with something and not follow pattern directions… I actually am pretty satisfied with the result. Thanks Emma with this awesome challenge ! So are you ready to Charlotte’s amazing creation?!(oh and if you want a little recap on what the challenge was and what items were on the mystery list, just click here!) […]

Mystery "Bag" Challenge: Jane from Smore House - Emkie Designs
    May 12, 2017 at 5:52 am

[…] I’ve always been a bit of a quirky dresser and started sewing clothing as a pipsqueak. I did two years of business school before I got bored, moved to Florida, and graduated from art school with a degree in fashion design instead. After several jobs in the field (apparel design, fabric design, art direction) I moved back to the great state of Michigan where I fell in love with bag making. I currently divide my time between creating bags, sewing up dresses, and dreaming of my own fabric lines. Web: http://www.smore-house.com FB: https://www.facebook.com/SmoreHouseDesigns/ IG: https://www.instagram/smore_house Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SmoreHouseDesigns Let’s get to know Jane a little bit more before we have a look at her wonderful creation 😉 Describe yourself in 5 words… Nerdy, Bubbly, Fashionable, Cat Enthusiast Tell us something not many people would know about you… People seem surprised when they find out I’m a major hockey fan. I try to watch every single Detroit Red Wings game each season. I miss a few, but not many. How long have you been sewing? Since I was little! I remember my mom buying me some muslin and cheap satin so I could make a renaissance fair type pattern when I was 10 maybe? It was probably terrible but I loved it. From then on I had my own machine and my mom would let me set up a sewing area in the dining room for weeks and weeks. I took my machine with me to college where the people who lived below me in the dorm would complain about the noise in the middle of the night! I definitely had a sewing curfew after that. Is sewing the only craft you spend time enjoying? If not, what other crafts help you pass the time? I knit, crochet, cross stitch, draw, paint, bake, and drink craft beer (does the last one count? It has craft in it but I guess I’m not the one crafting it). Do you only make bags? If not, what else do you enjoy making? I sew clothing and knit accessories (I’ve only finished one sweater, my sock success rate is much higher). I really enjoy making my own dresses to go along with my bags. Custom at every level! What made you fall in love with making bags? Story time: I had ordered a small project bag from a seller on Etsy and I wasn’t impressed with the quality. It was cute in the pictures but you could tell by the stitching in person that they just didn’t know their way around a machine. I stewed about it for a couple days and then started looking up indie patterns. I knew I could do a better job myself, lol. The first one I attempted was Andrie Designs’ Goin’ Uptown Tote and it was written in a way that was so easy to understand, especially coming from the world of clothes-sewing. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. It was a gateway drug. From there I went on to discover Little Moo and Emkie Designs and Emmaline and Swoon and Sew Sweetness and Noodlehead and so many countless others. I’m hooked! What was your favourite item in the mystery bag challenge list? Did you use it in your entry? If not, why? I really really hope someone uses the metal measuring tape just because I have no idea how it could be used! That was the craziest one for me. I thought about incorporating it into a pocket casing somehow to make some sort of snappy pocket closure, but I’m just not clever enough, haha! Have you got any exciting things coming up that you think would interest us? We would love to support you if you do! Stay tuned! Now that I’ve gotten a taste for making a pattern I might have a couple more ideas that I’m interested in getting out there! Which category did you decide to enter the Mystery “Bag” Challenge in? Why did you chose this category? I am in Category 1 for this round. I wanted this to be a selfish sew for me, since a lot of my bags are for customers these days. What is your favourite thing about your entry into the challenge? The simplicity! My goal was to take elements from the list and just use them in a very functional but beautiful way. What did you enjoy most about the challenge? It was a breath of fresh air to do my own idea for no one but myself. I spend a lot of time working on getting my customers their perfect bag (which I absolutely love, don’t get me wrong!) that it was a fun change of pace to do a completely selfish project for myself!
